‘UTTER!’ Spoken Word Edinburgh 2010

- PRESS RELEASE -
‘Utter!’ spoken word, Edinburgh Fringe 2010
(venue 156, page 139.)
Given that Richard Tyrone Jones, the Director of ‘Utter!’ spoken word, was hit by chronic heart failure in March, leaving him gasping for breath and walking with the aid of a stick and a pacemaker, he really shouldn’t be taking on the Edinburgh festival at all.
But rather than act sensibly and look after his health, the ‘ringmaster of spoken word’ (ThreeWeeks) has instead enlisted the help of over 80 poetic friends and guest hosts to ensure ‘Utter!’ spoken word returns again as the Flagship gig of the burgeoning Spoken Word phenomena at the festival – specifically, the spoken word section of PBH’s award-winning Free Fringe.
‘Utter!’ presents 22 shows with a brand new lineup each night, including firm festival favourites such as John Hegley, Baba Brinkman and Simon Munnery, showcasing many up-and-coming performers hitting the fringe solo for the first time such as Ross Sutherland, Tim Clare, radio 4’s Kate Fox, Tim Turnbull and Helen Mort, and many talented local bards such as Robin Cairns, Anita Govan, Chemical Poets and Jenny Lindsay (of ‘Is This Poetry?’)

Kate Fox, Sunday 8th, Thurs 19th, Fri 20th
This year, each show boasts a different theme: on various nights, Femmes Fatales wield poetic stilettoes (Aug 8th), we team up with global sensation literarydeathmatch.com (Tue 10th), take advantage of our venue being ‘the most Haunted pub in Scotland’ with ‘Utter!’ Ghoulies (Friday 13th), showcase future bestselling writers with the Univerity of East Anglia’s top graduates (Tue 17th), ‘Yo! Utter! Raps’ with Baba Brinkman (Weds 18th), Jocks have a go against Geordies (Thurs 19th) and we decide the stars of tomorrow at Utter!’s Got talent on Fri 27th.

John Hegley, Monday 16th
We’ve got so much talent, sometimes an hour isn’t enough. On Mon 16th we start early at 6.30pm, welcoming John Hegley, Simon Munnery, Tim Clare and other Luton-based (or lute-playing) minstrels for a two-hour Luton special (because doing it in Luton would just be too easy). And on Monday 23rd we do the same to welcome poets from SALT publishing, the most prolific poetry publisher in the UK, hosted by Edinburgh’s own Rob A. Mackenzie. So we hope you’ll join us for “a refreshing change from the never ending list of comedians” (hairline), especially as, for Richard Tyrone Jones, this year dying on stage is a literal concern…
